As noted in a previous blog post, my dreams of turning the Super Mario Bros Movie into a family event was smashed when Finn had trouble getting through it. Since then that movie has been the background to other family events at Gattitown, as it seems like they have had it played every recent time we have gone there to eat and play. Lindsey has finally seen all of the movie just from these trips for pizza.
Despite that movie not working out as planned we did end up seeing the Paw Patrol Movie 2 last year twice with Finn and that one he made it through fine. For the second time we went I found the last theater showing it locally in Round Rock and me, Finn and Rene caught it just before it stopped being played there.
Since then though we haven't tried for many movies, in fact Finn has outright told everyone who will listen that "he hates movies." It is clear what he really hates is being locked in one place having to be still for so long. I have recounted the experience taking him to see the Mario Movie in another post here.
I decided to try again this year with "Despicable Me 4" of all movies, on its opening weekend. He loved the movie and its Minions. It became a big bonding event between me and him afterwards when we listened to the soundtrack in the car for weeks, or when he got sick the weekend afterwards and we sat down that weekend and watched the other DM movies and the two Minion movies in three days! It was proof he didn't hate movies, he just hated ones that didn't cater to his age group.
But I ended up pushing it too far, as I pushed for him to go with me to see Transformers One one its opening weekend hoping to pass down my love for what once was my favorite cartoon growing up. I was really into the movie when about halfway through Finn declared he was done. I think it was just a ploy to get more candy, but instead we left- I think the only time in my life I have walked out of a movie.
I would love to get to a point where me and him could go once a month, but not every month has a Despicable Me. Hopefully when he gets older this story can have a part three.
