Back to the Movies

Even prior to COVID the concept of us going to the movies was always going to take a pause with our timeline for being parents. Luckily 2019 was not only my last year when I wasn't 100% a dad but also the best year for movies in decades, and I made sure to catch as many as I could that year including the big Marvel movie that mostly tied it up.

In 2020 we only saw movies that streamed online, but the pandemic meant that was basically all of them. The Bill and Ted movie gave me a decent three day nostalgia trip, but really movies and TV really were on a backburner for me. Also in 2021 and 2022 we did not enter the theaters, except for the Top Gun sequel that was really worth seeing. We experimented taking Finn to see the Minons 2 movie with all his grandparents to see if he could handle a movie, but really he mostly napped through it.

But in 2022 things changed. First of all Hollywood came back big time, secondly we had worked out Barbara being a consistent weekend babysitter, third this year has some movies from from big IPs that we all love, and finally this seems like the year when Finn can first go to the movies. So far the results have been mixed.

The big movie for me was the movie made from my favorite IP: The Mario Movie. It is the movie of the year so far, but for me it was a great chance to see how Finn could handle going to the movies and maybe a chance to get him to love Mario too. I had fantasies in my head the weeks before of how it would go: he would be enthralled and leave wanting to play Mario games with me.

When the day at the theater finally came I was so excited, but the results were mixed. I had brought candy for me to eat, but Lindsey got mad at me and said I couldn't eat it in front of him or she couldn't enjoy the movie because the whole time she would worry that he would choke. Frankly she ended being miserable the whole time and really kinda ruined my fun when she got up and left halfway because he couldn't stay still in his seat and she couldn't focus on the movie.

The moment she left Donkey Kong came on the screen and he mesmerized Finn. I started feeding him the forbidden candy to stay still and he ended up being good after being bribed the rest of the movie. When we left the theater I got a little bit of what I had dreamed about, as he was excited about "THE Super Mario Brothers!" for a few days because of the big ending when they teamed up.

Since the Mario Bros movie we saw a few other movies this year: GOG3 which wasn't bad, the new Indiana Jones which I think was actually pretty good. Overall it just feels good to be doing things like that again.
