During the 2018 Christmas we purposefully didn't make a big deal of it, and we knew it was the last Christmas that we didn't have to make a big deal out of. I still put up decorations as it was the first Christmas in the house and didn't want to come across to the neighbors as a bah humbug, but overall it was chill and we enjoyed the time together.
For Finn's first Christmas in 2019 we knew we needed to do better because we were parents. We put up a tree and decked out the yard and I made plans at work to get time to spend with Finn and Lindsey. I had a good month at work so it meant I could take a whole week plus off without problems, and that combined with no daycare meant that parenting was going to be a full time job.
The weekend before Christmas was spent at the Pipes lake house, where her whole family was there and Finn got many pictures in front of a Christmas tree. For Christmas day my parents came to our house and spent time with us there. Luna was boarded for the lake part but got to be around on Christmas, and I got good pictures of all of us together on Christmas day. Finn finally sat up by himself in a room full of his family, and when we cheered him for the accomplishment he looked around bewildered but motivated to do it again. It meant physical therapy worked.
For me the biggest take away regarding Christmas 2019 was all the time we spent with Finn. His whole first year we worked, and even though I got time with him on weekends and on physical therapy days overall he spent a lot of his time with Barbara and on weeknights it was such a routine that we really didn't just do sporadic things with the baby.
But the week of Christmas break and after I got the most time I had with Finn since his birth week, and I got to really know the little person we had made. The best Christmas gift I got was time to play with him, take him for walks, and for the three of us to spend time together without any real agenda or routine. Some of it was taxing compared to a normal week, but by the end of it I was already looking forward to the next time I would spend that much time with him even if that was the next Christmas.
