When the dog trifecta- Xena, Luna and Roscoe- was at its peak (2012-2016) Luna was always the dog on the bottom of the pile. When it came time to get treats Xena would demand to go last because years of being around smaller dogs made her think whoever got the last treat got the best one, which meant Luna was always in the middle (after a Roscoe who demanded to go first).
For most things it was this way, Luna on the bottom of the pile. Like when Roscoe started getting wet food because he lost his teeth, it was Xena who got the first shot at the plate after him. At best Luna would end up with the empty can, willing to cut her tongue to lick it completely clean rather than get nothing at all.
Or like when we went anywhere Luna would load up last. Luna would be the first dog dumped if we decided to not take them all for a walk. Luna would be locked outside if other dogs got to come over. Luna would be the last to go on a ride, and would be last to be invited into the bed. Sometimes I feel like her humping me was her way to reconcile the fact she was bottom dog (by proving that in fact I was bottom dog).
But during this period Luna did get one thing better than the other dogs: Blue Dog treats.
These baked treats all came in a box with a smiling blue dog, and were like dog animal crackers: some were monkeys, others were bunnies, other ones were little dogs. Roscoe like the smaller ones he could actually carry away, and Xena like the midsized ones (buffaloes) that she could easily rip out of my hands. That meant Luna got the biggest treats, including one that was a big heart that she really loved.
Now that we are past that era, and the trifecta has become simply just Luna, she gets every treat in the box. But her eye still light up when she sees that blue dog come home from the store, and it reminds her on an age when that was the best she could have.
