Sometime about a decade ago I stopped paying attention to popular music. When Lindsey and I stopped going to ACL yearly my exposure to it fell off, and right around then thanks to XM radio I got hooked on 1970's music which carried me through my next decade.
But I do pay attention to current events and when I read a headline about how the "song of the summer" Old Town Road was about to set a billboard record I became very interested in it. I knew the artist from his Twitter fame, and I appreciated the story behind the song.
So I played the song on spotify, and finding I didn't mind and it wasn't objectionable I became inspired to play it for Finn hoping he would like it. I realized this was a song I was going to hear for years one way or another and so I would like it to be tied to memories of baby Finn.
And he did like it! Sometimes he would bob his head to the beat, sometimes he would lay down and listen to it. But eventually it became a part of his playtime, and before it lost the #1 spot on billboard he associated it with me and I associated it with him. When I went out of town for Buddy's funeral Lindsey tried to play it for him to cheer him up but it only made him look for me.
Eventually I will get sick of it like the rest of America, and it will become just a good memory. But for now its the anthem of a phase of baby Finn right before he is mobile that I will never forget.
