Luna has always been one of the best natured dogs I have known, as she never showed any hostility to Roscoe or Xena when they were hostile with her. I would often call her a “gentle giant.” But despite the best intentions she is clumsy and clingy, and she only knew how to play rough when a person or dog wanted to play.
For these reasons I was nervous about what would happen when we brought home Finn. Would she sit on the baby out of love, or scratch him trying to get close? I figured she wouldn’t be hostile at all as per her nature, but at over 80lbs she could still do damage.
The day we brought him home I put Finn on the floor with Luna so she could see our newest person. Tommy kinda freaked out and said “get the baby off the floor” but I knew I trusted Luna and I didn’t want her to think he was something she couldn’t interact with. But as soon as we took Finn out of that protective carrier there was a chance that she could accidentally hurt him so I was also trying to be careful about how much to expose Finn.
Much to my relief and surprise Luna that day began to show a new level of being gentle that she never shows before. She loves licking us with her big tongue but she wouldn’t do the same with a young Finn until he got big enough to take it. She loves to throw a paw at people (to the point my friends nicknamed her “nut puncher”) but she has never done that with Finn. Even when he is on the floor she goes out of her way to not step on him or hurt him. She is a different dog with him.
And she loves him. From the start she guarded his Snoo, and would always check on him with a sniff through the mesh at regular intervals. She once barked at Rene for trying to take him in the middle of the night, and even when there is space on the bed when he is in there she sleeps in between the Snoo and the door. She loves when he is in a holder or on the floor where she can access him. When we come home with him we have to present him first and then we can tell her hi. She is her special puppy and she really enjoys him.
And he enjoys her. As a newborn who liked patterns he early on learned to enjoy her pretty coat and would love to stare at her back. As an almost six month old she loves interacting with him, and it’s now reciprocated. He would coo and flail after she licks his face, and will reach for her ears if she is within reach. He obviously trusts her and loves her, as do I for her showing me despite being an older dog she had a few tricks left.
