When we moved to our new neighborhood we quickly wanted to start walking around and figuring out where we could take Luna. In early 2018 they hadn't gotten the permits yet to build in the bottom half of the neighborhood, so down there we found a whole block that was quiet and peaceful and a good place to walk around.
About a month after we moved in I took Luna all the way to the end of the neighborhood and I found what I would call "the secret sidewalk" because there was this chunk of old (older than neighborhood) sidewalk with grown up grass all around it that was perfectly shaded in the morning and provided the exact walking experience I was looking for. Lindsey wasn't impressed by how short it was, but I was just happy to find something that could somewhat compare to walking around our last neighborhood with its many trees.
One day I was walking Luna down that way to the sidewalk, wanting to see how far she could go. On my mind was the stories of Glorious George, the 1940's wrestler who basically invented a large part of late 20th century culture. As we walked I thought about what it must have been like to watch George live back when no one did what he did, and I was engrossed in such trivial thoughts that often dominated my mind in a pre-kid era when I simply had the luxury to think about such things.
On that day when we got to the sidewalk it was surrounded by the biggest field of Sunflowers I ever saw. They were so large they blocked the view of the rest of the neighborhood, and so for a moment on that sidewalk I felt like I was far away from our new home is some fun and strange place that only me and Luna could go. I will never forget that walk, that day, when I got to soak in the best part of my new life.
Today I avoid that part of the neighborhood because its a constant construction zone, as they finally got the permits to build down there. But I will always remember how fun it was to discover the sidewalk, and what it meant to me to build up memories of walking a dog I will one day miss very much down it.
